OBITUARY

NICHOLAS CHARLES "NICK" WERLING, 90, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at Jenkins Living Center, Watertown, S.D. Born Dec. 11, 1924, in Fort Wayne, he was a son of Russell Dewey and Pearl (Lewis) Werling. At 1 1/2 years old, he contracted Polio and was treated at Shriners Hospital in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from North Side High School, Fort Wayne, in 1943, from Bowling Green State University, in 1947, and earned a Masters in Education from St. Francis University. On Dec. 23, 1955, Nick married Lily Christine Frahm in Fort Wayne. He taught at Hillcrest School and then for 35 years at Elmhurst High School, Fort Wayne, retiring in 1987. He taught U.S. History and Government, and coached basketball and golf. Nick lived a life that witnessed to his Christian faith, he enjoyed teaching people, and he was a lifelong Freemason and Chicago Cubs fan. Nick is survived by four sons, Nicholas Craig (Janine Rew) Werling of Watertown, S.D., Jeffrey (Pam) Werling of San Diego, Calif., Andrew Werling of Ning De City, Fujian China, and Benjamin (Amy) Werling of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren, Emma Christine (Mark) Nelsen, Hanna Sophia Werling, Grant Arthur Werling, Jackson Ross Werling, and Madeline Shay Werling; and one sister, Naoma Hettinger of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine; his parents; one son, Matthew; and two brothers: William and Frank. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. [Fort Wayne Newspapers, February 19, 2015]
