RAYMOND GARRETT, 87, of South Bend, formerly of Fort Wayne, died on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Center of Hospice & Palliative Care in Elkhart. Born Aug. 7, 1922, in Penn Township, Jay County, he was a 1940 graduate of Pennville High School. He attended Taylor University for three years, and then graduated from Ball State University in 1947. He received his Master's Degree from Ball State in 1957. He began teaching at Pennville High School from 1947 to 1948, then taught at Union Center School in Wells County from 1948 to 1957. From 1957 to 1987, he taught mathematics at Elmhurst High School. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran; a member of Indiana Retired Teacher Organization; and member of Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend. He formerly attended Waynedale United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne, where he served as an usher and was a 43 year member. Mr. Garrett enjoyed keeping time at Elmhurst basketball games. He is survived by his wife, Bertha B. Garrett of South Bend; children, Paul B. (Carol) Garrett of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Joseph B. (Elaine) Garrett of South Bend, David B. (Junko) Garrett of Los Angeles, Calif. and Karen A. (Peter) Garrett of Manhatten, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Mary Garrett of Hartford City and Jeane Garrett of Muncie; cousins, Thelora Mason, Eileen Diehm, Cloyce Avey, Norman Priest, Merlyn Dubaugh, Helen Case and Don Garrett; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Robert Garrett. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday at The Gilead Church, Jay County, with calling one hour prior to service at the church. Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Department of Grace United Methodist Church, Waynedale United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Fund of The Gilead Church. Burial in I.O.O.F. Twin Hills Cemetery, Pennville, Ind.
